Membership FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What does it mean to become a member of Spirit United?
Membership at Spirit United means receiving the blessing of participating in an inclusive spiritual community, which honors each individual's journey. It means you have the support of a large community of people who are dedicated to transformational unfoldment, and personal and spiritual growth and well-being, for themselves and for all other members. It also means that our community is blessed by your presence, support and participation.

Do I have to profess to a particular creed to become a member?
We do not profess to one particular creed although it is assumed that members agree with and support the Guiding Principles. At the time of membership, as a group, members affirm, "We join ourselves in a circle of commitment to support the creation and maintenance of Spirit United Church," and individually affirm, "I support Spirit United in the manner best suited to my unique gifts, talents and resources."

What is expected of me as a member?
We ask each member to support Spirit United "in the manner best suited to their unique gifts, talents and resources." Each individual decides how s/he can best do that. Our "Members/Friends Resource Sheet" offers many examples. Tithing and financial offerings are needed. We understand that some people have limited financial resources and we appreciate offering of any size, or any other type of contribution - such as volunteer service. It is each individual's choice.

Do I need to attend any membership classes?
There are New Member and General Inquiry classes which meet several times, however attendance is not a pre-requisite to becoming a member. It is recommended, so that each person has the opportunity to review the Guiding Principles and general philosophies that are important to this community, and to ask questions. Check out the Events & Classes page or call or email us at contact@spiritunited.com for information.

How do I become a member?
Call the church office with any further questions you have. Then print this page and complete the form below and a member resource form, and participate in a short membership welcoming ritual on Membership Sunday (held 3 - 4 times a year). Your name will be added to the membership roster and mailing list.

What are the benefits of membership?
What you receive is partnership in a spiritual community that values and supports your personal journey with compassion, caring, and support, and an opportunity to serve the Great Work of which we are all a part.

Can I have a dual membership with Spirit United and another church?
Yes, if that is your desire.
